Summer Camp - March 2021 Update

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope and trust everyone is well and keeping safe.  We just wanted to send an update regarding the current status of summer camps for 2021.  As it stands right now, overnight camps in Ontario are still under a government mandate to remain closed and have not yet been given the official green light to operate this summer.  Because of this, we have decided to postpone the opening of our summer camp registration until further notice.  Due to the current circumstances, we've decided it will be best not to open our registration until there is some more clarity around our ability to offer our summer programs this year.

With that being said, there has been some good news recently!  You may have seen in the news that the Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams sent an encouraging open letter to the Ontario Camps Association (which we are a member of) and Ontario Camps.  Though not providing camps any assurance we will be allowed to open this summer it expresses the importance of camps for our kids and youth and the desire to work with camps to potentially see us reopen this summer.  If interested, you can read the official Letter from Dr. David Williams here.  The OCA has also just released a public response to Dr. David Williams letter which you can read here.

As can be read in the letter, should overnight camps be allowed to open, there will be many changes in order for this to be able to be done safely.  The Ontario Camps Association continues to do a great job of being in communication with public health and supporting camps with useful guidelines and information to help us plan accordingly.  As is the case with schools, there is no way we will be able to completely eliminate the potential of Covid-19 at camp, but the goal is to mitigate risks by doing what we can in order to create a safe camp environment for those who would wish to send their kids to camp this summer as that is a top priority for us.  To give you a glimpse of some of the changes we have made/are making for this summer to keep camp safe and comply with regulations, please see below:

  • Reducing our camper capacity by about 50%
  • Thorough screening protocols for staff and campers before attending camp, which may include the need to be tested prior to being allowed to attend camp for the week and the monitoring of camper health throughout the week
  • Enhanced cleaning protocols and also ending our camp sessions on Fridays as opposed to Saturdays to give sufficient time for us to thoroughly clean between camp sessions
  • Running a cohort model of camp (similar to schools) where campers and staff will be placed in smaller groups that they will be with all week that will coincide with the cabins they will be sleeping in.
  • All activities throughout the day will be done in Cohorts as opposed to our normal camp wide interactions
  • Not allowing visitors at camp this summer
  • Masking and social distancing when appropriate
  • Strict protocols on dealing with potential Covid cases at camp

The situation with Covid-19 continues to change so we continue to work with the OCA as they provide camps with the most up to date information regarding the safe reopening of camp this summer.  Should we be allowed to open, we know things will look different, but we strongly believe 'different camp' is better than no camp!  Our property was WAY too quiet last summer and we long to be able to welcome back campers this summer and believe it is needed now more than ever.

All of our camp families registered to attend camp in the past 2 years will receive an email from us once registration has officially been open. We will initially invite families to fill out all the required forms but won't be requiring payment right away. As was our commitment last year, should you register and pay for a child to attend a session that later needs to be canceled, you will be issued a full refund.

We know that these are challenging times for us all and at the Scott Mission we offer different types of support for families in need.  Updates on Scott Mission programs and services can be found at www.scottmission.com

If you have anything you would like us to pray for specifically, please let us know by filling out our form by clicking HERE.
