summer 2021 update

Summer Camp - May 26th 2021 Update

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope and trust everyone is well and keeping safe.  We just wanted to share an update regarding the current status of Scott Mission Camp this summer.  Though we are planning for a very different summer this year, we are excited to say that we will be able to welcome campers back to SMC this summer in a very limited capacity. After being completely closed last summer, the thought of having campers back on property this summer has us very excited! With that being said, because of the continued uncertainty around exactly when overnight camps will officially be allowed to open, we have made the decision to cancel our traditional overnight summer camp programming in favour of a day camp model. We look forward to seeing our traditional overnight programs return next summer but with the continued uncertainty regarding overnight, we've decided to move forward with a plan that gives us the best chance of being able to run programming this summer as opposed to being in a place where we would need to cancel our programs again. There are 2 different programs we will be running this summer as outlined below:

Camper reunion days

These will be offered at the end of August for those 10-14 years old. We will open registration for these towards the end of June.  It will be similar to the camper reunions we normally run throughout the year where campers get to take the bus from Toronto to camp for a day and to experience a 'normal' camp day in a condensed time frame.  Though not a week at camp like a normal summer, we are excited to at least have campers from this age bracket up at camp to experience and enjoy great activities and experience the social aspect of camp that has been missing for so long! Campers will be able to be registered for one day in August as we want to make room for as many campers as possible to be able to visit camp this summer.

Foundations Program (a modified version of our normal foundations leadership program)

This will be a five week program starting in July for those 15-18 years old. There will be 2 different groups in this program and each group will come to camp for two days each week. We will be sending more details about this and opening registration in June.  We know the significant impact our leadership programs have had in the past and with the reduced capacity this summer we wanted to be able to give more focus and time to those in our SMC community who will benefit from this type of program and who are also reaching the age where they will no longer be able to be a part of our yearly summer programs as campers.

In order to be in compliance with all public health protocols and to offer a safe camp experience, our capacity has been significantly reduced this summer. Because of this, we won't be opening registration publicly on our website as we do in normal years. We are giving priority to those who registered last year and needed to be cancelled and also those who attended camp in 2019. If you fall into this category, you would have already have been receiving update emails from us and will also receive further information when registration opens in June. God willing, as things return to normal, we will move back to a normal registration process for Summer 2022.

The Ontario Camps Association continues to do a great job of being in communication with public health and supporting camps with useful guidelines and information to help us plan accordingly.  Based on the guidelines provided to us and in order to operate safely, we continue to plan and have made some significant changes to how we are running camp this summer.  To give you a glimpse of some of the changes we have made/are making for this summer to keep camp safe and comply with regulations, please see below:

  • Reducing our camper capacity
  • Thorough screening protocols for staff and campers before attending camp
  • Enhanced cleaning protocols
  • Running a cohort model of camp (similar to schools) where campers and staff will be placed in smaller groups that they will be with each week
  • All activities throughout the day will be done in Cohorts as opposed to our normal camp wide interactions
  • No visitor policy during camp this summer
  • Masking and social distancing when appropriate
  • Strict protocols on dealing with potential Covid cases at camp

We know that these are challenging times for us all and at the Scott Mission we offer different types of support for families in need.  Updates on Scott Mission programs and services can be found at www.scottmission.com
